Morus alba x rubra 'Wellington'

Considered one of the best mulberry varieties grown at the New York State Fruit Testing center in Geneva, it was originally discovered on the NY property of Richard Wellington. Probably a wild cross of Morus alba and rubra. The tree is a heavy cropper, reliably winter hardy, and self fertile. The sweet, black, cylindrical fruits, averaging 1 1/4" each, ripen over 6-7 weeks, starting early and pumping out the delicious fruit for a surprisingly long time. This appears to be a member of the "everbearing" group of mulberries that offer an extended ripening window. This variety is not to be confused with a British mulberry variety of the same name; the American Wellington is clearly a superior variety in every way!

Considered reliably resistant to popcorn disease in hot and humid climates. Provide consistent water during first 2 years of establishment. Considered low chill, needing only 200-400 hours between 32F-45F to bloom and set fruit.

Cold Hardy to USDA Zone: 5

Mature Height: 30'

Sun: Full Sun

Ripening Time: July-August

Pollination: Self-Fertile
